Description
This stunning headdress is called the Suntiang, which is a majestical head adornment from the Minang people living in West Sumatra, Indonesia. This Suntiang is worn by a bride during the wedding ceremony.

Headdress Meaning
In the past a big Suntiang was not just one headpiece, decoration pins were tied into the hairroll piece by piece, weighing up to 5 kilo. These decoration pins were structured in different types of layers. The lowest flower layer is called 'bungo sarunai' and this specific Suntiang has 3 'bungo sarunai' layers to create the foundation. The middle arrays are called 'bungo gadang' and the outer layer is called 'Kambang Goyang'. Back in the days you would need in total 7-11 layers, depending on the strength of the bearer, nowadays it is tradition to keep an odd number of layers. This specific Suntiang is old of age and counts in total 9 layers.
The size of the crown is determined by the amount of 'mansi', the wires you can count from the backside. The biggest Suntiangs count 25 wires, this Suntiang has 23 wires, and nowadays, the more common ones only have 21 wires. The Suntiang usually takes up to 12 hours to make.
The bigger the crown, the more strength a bride has, which also symbolizes she will be strong to carry the marriage in good times and in bad times.
